Hi, I'm Joshua Meeks

Software developer based in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

A little about myself

My first time ever programming was using HTML/CSS to customize MySpace pages. (2005?)
The second time was when I made a Black-Scholes calculator with Python. (2019)
My third time was attempting to build a website for my reptile business. (2021)

I actually thought I could build a fully functioning website in a weekend.
That turned into a month, and then that month turned into two, and then three, four...
Then I needed to learn React, "I should learn Node", "How do computers actually work?"

I just wanted to build a website.

Technologies

babel bash bootstrap c cplusplus css3 express git html5 javascript jest mongodb mysql nodejs react sass tailwind typescript webpack

Things I've worked on

SoGen Reptiles

A website for the reptile business I started when I lived in Florida. You can view my inventory of animals I have for sale, purchase an animal via Stripe Payments, set up a shipping schedule or contact me for any inqueries or issues. I built it in React because it sounded like fun. This is my first time interacting with an API in a real-world scenario. Future goals are to incorporate NextJS for server-side rendering and better SEO performance.

    What I learned

  • Stripe API
  • React isn't very SEO friendly
  • Responsive web design is easier if you do mobile first

Bookshelf

Bookshelf is a web app for storing your reading information. Save books that you've read or want to read in the future. Check off the books you've read and favorite the ones you love. The demo utilizes local storage only, but signing up and logging in get you full features like persistent storage of books (log in on any device to retrieve your data) and filtering options.

    What I learned

  • MongoDB
  • Authentication/authorization
  • Figma
